Amazon Acquires Primary Care Service

Amazon is officially a healthcare provider after its $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical, which provides on-demand virtual primary care for a flat annual fee, according to The Verge. For $199 a year, currently discounted to $144, members can access telehealth services at any time, with guaranteed same-day or next-day appointments. Not everyone supports the acquisition, however — the FTC is currently investigating the deal as it considers filing an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon.

Amazon made progress in acquiring the primary care company, One Medical, by getting approval from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). The OHA made the decision based on its findings that the transaction is unlikely to substantially reduce access to affordable healthcare in Oregon. The transaction will be monitored frequently by the OHA to make sure they are staying compliant.
